Mecca Bingo recently announced the winner of their nationwide cookery challenge, which aimed to find the best family recipe in Britain. Barbara Brussel was declared the winner after wowing the jury with a dish called ‘chicken Arabic surprise’.
Mecca bingo launched its promotion in August this year, and used its land-based bingo venues in addition to its popular online bingo website to promote the family recipe challenge.

As promised by Mecca bingo, Barbara Brussel’s recipe will be featured in a charity cook book scheduled for release at some point this year. There were only two criteria for entry: the recipe should take no more than ninety minutes to prepare, and should be able to feed a family of four for under £5. In response to this promotion, entries poured in on the website and also at Mecca bingo venues across the UK.
Barbara’s dish was chosen by the jury at Mecca Bingo because it met the criteria perfectly; the ingredients were cheap and the dish was easy to prepare. In fact, it was these two factors that made her dish stand out from all of the other entries. The competition received a number of different dish ideas in response to the challenge, ranging from recipes passed down over generations to regular British fare.
