History of online Bingo
Bingo has been entertaining and thrilling millions of people, around the world since 1530. Bingo is played not with the aim of winning big prizes but for the excitement, fun, suspense and spirit of friendship which are closely associated with the game.
Bingo is said to have originated from the 16th century lottery called, ‘Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia’ in Italy. It was introduced in 1930 and is still being played in Italy. The French developed their version, ‘Le Lotto’ in the late 1700s which was a tremendous hit with the rich and wealthy. Le Lotto was played, using a caller who called numbers from 1 to 90, inscribed on wooden discs and drawn from a bag. The game was soon embraced by Germany, who mainly used it for educational purposes.
The first commercial version of Bingo was introduced by Edwin S. Lowe and Carl Leffler. The game was initially known as ‘Beano’ but when an excited female player shouted the word ‘Bingo’ to announce her winning, it sounded attractive and was quickly accepted as the name of the game.
Bingo has a history of being played in churches to help in raising funds for the poor and the church. During 1934, an estimated 10,000 games of Bingo was played on a weekly basis in the churches of North America.
In 2003, online Bingo was allowed to be played in the UK. There are several Bingo websites which offer different prizes and are regularly visited by millions of people on a daily basis.
